Orizon identifies the key technology factors in financial sector mergers
After taking part in Spain's last two bank mergers, Orizon identifies the keys to guaranteeing capacity and service through the integration.
Madrid, 9 January 2023. – The Spanish technology company Orizon, an expert in continuous performance improvement for large companies, has identified the key factors in the technology integration that comes with any merger in the financial sector. The company has systematised these keys based on what it learned taking part in the last two bank mergers in Spain, with the aim of guaranteeing capacity and service after the integration.
According to Orizon, a merger creates a highly demanding environment for technology, and in such environments, the company notes, defects or flaws accepted until then can no longer be tolerated. In these contexts, the company says, it is necessary to guarantee that the target systems will be ready to carry out the migration: that they are sized to take the load of the source information and have the capacity to process all operations normally from the day after the migration (D+1).
For the company, this objective requires three key factors: identifying the capacity limitations of the target technology environment; making the adaptations and changes needed to support the increased operating load; and anticipating the behaviour of the target environment through tests that simulate real operations.
Four critical areas: infrastructure, software, batch and online processing
Acting on these three factors means working in four areas, all of them critical: infrastructure, software, batch processing and online processing. Orizon carries out these tasks through its Performance Technical Office (OTR), based on its BOA platform and its DevPerOps methodology, the only standard for continuous performance improvement in the market today. With this platform, the company defines the work areas in each of these four fields, details the actions to take and draws up the migration plan to ensure the most efficient operation after the integration.
For the target infrastructure, the aim is to determine how much capacity needs to grow to absorb the new volumes without incidents, and in which specific areas of that infrastructure an extension is needed. For software assets, it is essential to check whether there are limitations and, if so, to determine the adaptations needed to ensure they work correctly and efficiently once they go back into production after the integration.
The third and fourth areas are batch processing (mainframe) and online processing, both equally critical. For batch, once the right processing capacity is guaranteed, the aim is to determine how the new volumes may affect Service Level Agreements (SLAs), one of the key indicators for continuous performance improvement, and to carry out the optimisation needed to ensure they are met.
For online processing, the key is to make sure that, after D+1, there are no problems handling peaks in transactional demand. This requires detailed knowledge and a review of the most frequently run business operations, taking into account two KPIs that are fundamental for the business, infrastructure resource consumption and response time, which directly and indirectly affect the bottom line.
According to Orizon's CEO, Ángel Pineda, "while it's true that mergers are a challenge, they are also an opportunity to show the enormous advantages of adopting a standard of continuous performance improvement". "In these processes, costs are fundamental, and in technology the goal is for 1+1 to make not 3, but 1.5. That's where we play a key role," Pineda adds, "because it's not just about all the software working, but about it behaving properly in a highly demanding environment. Performance," Pineda concludes, "reveals what's going wrong, the business opportunities being lost and the unnecessary costs being taken on, which, without the stress of an integration, often go unnoticed."
